When It’s Right

About When It’s Right

Still licking his wounds after a messy breakup, Nate is at loose ends for New Year’s Eve and itching for a wild and crazy adventure to jolt him out of his rut. Now if he could only convince his best friend, Cassie, to break away for an impromptu road trip to Times Square.

Fun as it sounds, Cassie is reluctant to accept Nate’s invitation. Little does he know, she’s made resolutions of her own—resolutions about finally getting over her long-standing crush on him. Telling herself this trip will be the perfect “last hurrah”, she packs her bag.

The trip is a fiasco from the outset. A car that won’t start, a freak storm that strands them on the side of the road, and a long drive with too much time for true confessions. Cassie’s rocks Nate to the core, leaving him wondering if the best thing that ever happened to him has been right in front of him all along.

Warning: Contains two best friends, a secret crush, and a road trip that leads to tow trucks, unexpected hotel-room sharing, epiphanies, sex, and more.

Cover_When It's Right“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”

Bracing his arms on the sides of the engine block, he rose and shot her a glare over his shoulder. “Yes, Ms. Smarty Pants. I think I know how to fix my own car.”

She cocked an eyebrow at him but bit back her reply. Sure enough, after a few more seconds of posturing, his shoulders slumped and he pushed off, turning to face her as he wiped his hands on a rag. His face was streaked with black and there were smudges on his shirt as well.

“Okay, fine.” His lips turned into a disappointed pout that melted her heart. “I admit it. This is beyond me.”

How to respond to that? Striving for neutrality, she gave him a wavering half-smile. “Should I start trying to figure out something else to do tomorrow night?”

The corner of his mouth turned down in confusion. “What do you mean? Your car got you here, didn’t it?”

He didn’t… Surely he wouldn’t. Her eyebrows shot up in disbelief. “And what makes you think it’s going to be able to make it to New York?”

“Come on, it’s not that bad.”

They both turned their heads as one, gazing at the car-shaped pile of rust currently lowering property values where it was parked on the other side of the street.

“Yes. Yes, it is that bad.”

“So it doesn’t have heated seats or power steering—”

“Or tread on the tires or brakes. The gerbils in the engine don’t work in the cold, Nate.”

He had to be kidding.

“Come on. You can’t really be ready to give up that easy?”

He wasn’t kidding.
