About Shadows

A cryptic, urgent text message turns the peaceful life Skye Barrows has created for herself and her sister into chaos. She must follow her father’s instructions to the letter, but Sebastian Connelly is blocking her way. Telling Sebastian what she must do is not an option.

What He Doesn’t Know Will Get Them All Killed

BookCover_Shadows copyWhen a prison break in the midst of a security system upgrade threatens to destroy the reputation of Sebastian’s company, Black Raven Private Security Contractors, he goes on the hunt for escaped prisoner Richard Barrows – a delusional and paranoid computer software genius.

Sebastian’s mission: find Richard Barrows and return him to prison, but stonewalled by Skye, who refuses to give him answers, and with the added complication of her special needs sister, Sebastian finds himself always a step or two behind vicious killers.

Nothing About This Case is Normal

For Sebastian, it should be simple, but this case will test him in ways he never imagined. As probing interrogation becomes urgent protection, the search for Barrows forces Sebastian and Skye into a murky world of shadows and illusions.

At six-five, Sebastian could stand upright in the jet, but what he needed was a good, arms-over-head stretch, and that was impossible. “Get the senior agents for each team on the line for action reports.”

“Back in five.”

Sebastian slung his backpack over one shoulder and nodded to the two pilots, who stood at attention as he departed. “I’ll call with a departure time. For now, plan on two hours.”

He walked down the narrow stairs to the tarmac, breathing in fresh, crisp February air. Above the yellow and orange horizon, stars blinked in the clear, pre-dawn sky. He didn’t bother breaking the connection with Ragno as she put together the conference call. He could hear her keyboard clicking and her soft breaths. While they worked the prison break, they’d keep an open line throughout the day and most of the night.

Sebastian walked to a black Range Rover that had pulled up to the private airport’s landing strip. He usually enjoyed high-stakes hunts with elusive prey, but Barrows wasn’t just elusive. He had disappeared, and Sebastian couldn’t get a handle on where he might be. No one could.

Sebastian nodded to Pete St. Paul, the driver of the Range Rover, who had stepped out and opened the front passenger door for Sebastian. Pete was one of Black Raven’s newer agents. “Good morning, sir.”

“Morning.” Sebastian dropped his backpack into the footwell of the passenger side, did an arms over head stretch before stepping into the SUV and extended his legs as he pushed the seat back as far as it could go. “Having fun yet?”

Pete’s smile made it to his dark brown eyes. “I’ve done worse.” He shut the door and came around to the driver’s side.

Excerpt

After a long night evading kidnappers and the authorities, Stig and Christina are finally, if temporarily, safe in his secret room in a tunnel under London. Time to clean up.

He reached for the zip at his throat. His shredded dress shirt was in the emergency room, so the steady sixty-three degrees underground was bracing as he pulled his arms out of the overall sleeves.

BookCover_TheSecondLie copy“What are you doing?”

He glanced at her. “Changing.”

“Oh.” She was looking below his neck, not at his face, and while she wasn’t edging closer, she also wasn’t backing away. No man with an ounce of self-awareness could have resisted inflating his chest and checking his posture under her gaze.

Her eyes widened as she took a matching breath, but her outer layer was too baggy for return admiration. He slipped out of his shoes and dawdled shoving the overalls past his hips. Her gaze followed his hands, lingering at his stomach. He knew when she looked at the trail of hair leading lower from his navel, because her eyes were almost as hot as he imagined her touch would be. The need to rush disappeared, replaced by a hunger to see what she would do next. He rested his hands on the waist of his dirty trousers, and his thumb slipped behind the button to rest against his skin. Yes, she saw that too, and her hand clenched. “Fair notice. I’m going to remove these next.”

She remained silent, but a slight head movement seemed to be a nod, so he proceeded. Slowly.

He popped the button and unzipped without taking his eyes off her. She still didn’t move, as frozen as a marble statue, the flickering candlelight making her appear almost as translucent around the edges as the best of Bernini’s nymphs.

Bending to strip off the trousers would break the spell that bound them. He waited for a moment, savoring the silent connection, but a man couldn’t stand there with his fly drooping open if the woman wasn’t going to leap into action. Showing one’s boxers became rather embarrassing after a few minutes.

He glanced down. A chap had to keep a few secrets.

“Oh! I’m sorry.” She turned abruptly to the farthest locker and struggled with the catch. “What’s in here? May I open it?” Her words were rushed, satisfying him that he’d rattled her.

“It’s either that or turn around to see what you see. Which is scarier?” All she’d see was him stepping into a pressed pair of trousers.

About Warrior Mine—Base Branch Novel 4

A silver fox learns new tricks.

The Base Branch office in Washington D.C. is so heavily fortified it makes Fort Knox look like a 7-Eleven. After twenty years in covert ops, nothing fazes Commander Vail Tucker. When a lightning bolt of feminine fury crashes into the interrogation room, holds him at gunpoint, and takes over the task with his prisoner, he’s more than surprised. She escapes without a trace, but Vail is unable to remain dispassionate. He must know what is so important the beguiling woman would risk her life to find it.

Carmen Ruez is deadly and desperate—a combustible combination. Born into the remnants of the Arellano Felix Organization, drugs and violence kept her in a gilded cage—until a twist of fate showed her the roots of their riches, making her yearn for freedom. She works for it. Fights for it. But her brother crosses the line to keep her loyal to the treacherous family she is determined to leave behind.

Following instinct, Vail uncovers Carmen’s motives and is galvanized by a protective instinct he hadn’t known he possessed. Determination and desire force them to work together to defeat those loyal to Carlos Ruez and the AFO. But are those traits enough to make them fight for a future together?

“Pat your pockets,” she ordered.

When his back faced her he tried to wither his cock into submission with a scowl, but then he met her gaze again. What little progress he’d made reining himself in died under her gaze.

“The first two buttons on your shirt, open them.”

Vail swallowed, and licked his lips before setting to work on the buttons. “If you’re trying to check me out, there are easier ways. Knock on my front door and tell me to strip. Better yet, knock on my front door naked, and—”

“I’m sure you’re quite used to that reaction from women, Commander. But you are not my type.”

“Exactly what type am I?” he asked with a grin, pulling the separated fabric of his shirt wide.

“The kind to shoot me in the heart the moment I take my eyes off you.” She maintained a level gaze, refusing to look at his bare chest.

He’d sweated through his undershirt in the first session with Ruez today. “And now what would you like me to do?” A satisfied smirk quirked his lips.

“Bring me to Carlos Ruez.”

His smile fell, and he began refastening his shirt.

“I’ll detonate this place myself before I let you take him out of here.”

Cover_AMightyGoodMan copyScowling, ‘Hank’ Jerry—a woman who wore the self-made moniker the way some might armor—jammed her smartphone into the front pocket of her cargo pants and sucked a drag off her first cancer stick of the day, exhaling into the predawn behind her Aunt Henry’s restaurant. The fluorescents overhead cast a harsh glow over this particular piece of real estate in Fiddler’s Elbow, Pennsylvania—a throwback hunky mill town where dial-up was considered high tech and people still lived life one pierogie at a time.

From the shadows behind the dumpster, a man emerged and limped toward her, clutching his side, his chest heaving, clouds of his breath hanging in the April air.

“Hide me!” he gasped.

“What the hell?” Heart pounding, Hank retreated a few steps and threw her cigarette to the ground. Blood, bruises, panic—all of it oozed from this man who’d materialized like smoke. Tires squealed on pavement in the alley running the length of the restaurant and hodge-podge of neighboring buildings.

“Will you?” he ground out.

A dozen fleeting impressions swamped her brain. Muscular. Dirty. Unshaven. Murderer? Crazy? Eyes, wild and green, probing and pleading in the artificial light. In the alley, car doors slammed. Feet pounded gravel and shouts cut through the dark. Two people? More?

“Please.”

They locked eyes. No, said her gut. Not crazy. But maybe she was.

Lola’s point of view during the Skype call with the bad guy:

BookCover_UltimatePrey copyLola grabbed a sheet of computer paper and a pen from the table, then quickly jotted, “Why contact CORE? Why not just hunt?” She held the paper up for one of the agents to see and pointed to it.

Hudson was the first to notice, and cleared his throat. “Why are you telling us?” he asked.

The man chuckled. “I love how concerned you are about your boss. But you were always blunt and to the point.” He moved around the bound couple and stood in front of them. “Here’s what I expect from all of you—nothing. Do not try and find them or me. Do not set foot in Florida. If I find out that any of you are here, I will desist with the hunt, torture the lovebirds and feed them to the alligators. Then I will come after whoever disobeys my orders. I will start with your extended families just to make you suffer. Clear?”

The agents nodded.

“I don’t believe you.” He pulled a knife from the harness strapped at this ankle, then cut the tape binding Lola’s mom’s left arm to the chair. “I honestly didn’t plan on bringing Cami into this. I was always a big fan,” he said to her mother, and took her hand in his. “It’s unfortunate that you keep bad company.” He snapped her mom’s pinky.

Interview with Karyn Lawrence

Susana: How long have you been writing?

Karyn: I’ve been writing my whole life. It was short stories in high school and then on to screenplays when I hit college. When I was supposed to be studying database programming, I would stay up late at night and write terrible screenplays for features. They were usually action movies with romance . . . the film equivalent of romantic suspense. After fifteen years with some success, I got the crazy notion to write a novel version of that first screenplay I completed. I started in January of 2013 and published my first novel, “Stay” in May of this year.

Susana: What comes first: the plot or the characters?

Karyn: The characters, absolutely. Once I have a strong idea of who they are, the plot develops from that. This is a huge departure from screenwriting; it’s typically the other way around in film. It’s ALL about the plot and action, even when it’s a character-driven film.

Susana: Are you a plotter or a panster?

Karyn: I’m a hybrid of sorts. I don’t write anything down or make notes. Structure has been so beaten into me through the years that I have all of the major story beats mapped out in my head before I begin, and I don’t start a scene until I know exactly how it’s going to end. I find if I write outlines, I lose motivation to write the story and I feel locked in to the decisions I made at the outline stage. It should be noted that this lack of outline makes my husband crazy.

Susana: Are you working on something at present that you would like to tell us about?

Karyn: I am polishing the second draft of the third book in this series, working title “Surrender”, and it’s due to the editor at the end of December. I’d like to put that book out by April 2015.

Susana: What is your work schedule like when writing?

Karyn: I have a nine-to-five job and write during my hour lunch break. I polish whatever I wrote in my last writing session, and usually average about 500 words. Then, after dinner with the family and the kids are in bed, I write from nine to ten-thirty. On the weekends, I write for an hour or so in the morning, during my three-year-old’s nap, and after bedtime.

Susana: What author has most influenced your writing?

Karyn: Anne Stuart. I picked up her first book in the Ice Series (Black Ice) right after it came out, and it blew me away. It was the first romantic suspense book I’d read that featured an anti-hero, action, an international setting, and some steamy sexy-times. It was firing on all cylinders for me. I was completely addicted, and I’ve read all of the books in her series multiple times.

Susana: Who gave you the writing advice that sticks with you to this day?

Karyn: I have two: I had a screenwriter instructor (I unfortunately can’t remember his name) tell me that there must be two people in every scene who don’t agree with each other. Conflict moves plot forward and disguises exposition. So even if it’s two people talking about grocery shopping, make them fight about which brand of cereal to put on the list. The other is my editor, Karen Dale Harris, who told me to imagine my characters are blindfolded when writing a love scene. Originally my scenes were little more than stage directions and lacked any feeling.

Susana: Do you write in multiple genres or just one?

Karyn: I’m getting ready to publish under a pen name in the contemporary erotic romance genre, and I have a book in the hopper to write that will be a romantic comedy.

Susana: What advice would you give to a writer just starting out?

Karyn: Finish that first book, script, novella, etc. Even if it’s garbage. (You can edit! You can fix!) After the first one is under your belt, the second one is easier. It’s like running. It doesn’t matter how slow you are because it’s amazing how quickly you can improve. Just keep slapping those fingers on the keyboard and you’ll get to the finish line.

Cover_KeytoLove copyLucas Fisher stood inside Whitman’s Paper and Paint Store, surrounded by the pungent scents of vinyl wallpaper, turpentine, and paint, and wondered how he had allowed himself to be tricked into abandoning his work at the garage. However, nothing had prepared him for Whitman’s Paint and Paper. It was like stepping onto another planet.

“What are we looking for again?” He watched her leaf through the pages of a pattern book with a speed that defied logic. “Blue dogs?”

“Ah, French blue, something like this.” She paused only long enough to point to a flower so small the average person would need a magnifying glass. She flipped the page before he had a chance to commit it to memory.

Lucas rubbed his bleary eyes with the palms of his hands. Every pattern had begun to look like the next, melting into a haze of swirling tones. God, he needed an aspirin and a beer. “You’re absolutely sure this wallpaper exists?” He squinted at her with a skeptical look, and she nodded, her fingers nimbly turning the pages of yet another book.

“Uh-huh”

“Oh, terrific. There are at least five hundred books here, and we’ve been through what? Two dozen? I imagine you have someone lined up to hang the dang rolls?”

“Uh-huh, you and Fritz. But only if you’d stop talking and help me find it.”

“Me and your brother?” His voice came out in a hysterical wail. “Get serious, Liz, I’ve never wallpapered a room in my life.” Hell, he couldn’t wrap a Christmas present unless it was packaged in a box with four crisp corners and there were yards of paper to waste.

“Neither has Fritz, but he’s watched my mother do it many times. It’s a piece of cake.” Her hands continued flashing through the pages.

“Piece of cake? Are you sane? Unless Fritz has flashbacks, we’re doomed.” Lucas slumped down wearily onto a nearby chair and cupped his face in his hands.

Dante is still in love with his wife and would do anything to have her back in his life again. He’s been miserable since she left him to deal with the grief over their daughter’s abduction, never understanding how much he grieves as well. When Jessica tells him about the case she’s working, he jumps at the chance to take part in her investigation. He’s hoping not only to save their marriage and ease his personal pain over the loss of their daughter, but to stop a serial kidnapper from taking another victim.

As Jessica and Dante work side by side, pregnant women begin to turn up missing or dead, and they start to uncover the consequences of another woman’s unfathomable grief. The childless mother doesn’t just want a baby. She wants a newborn straight from the womb.

And when forced to confront the dark and twisted perversion of a mother’s obsession, can Jessica and Dante find their lives again…or merely more death?

Cover_Ultimate Fear copyJessica’s heart sped up when she caught the determination in his eyes. “Then why did you have me come over?” she asked, suspecting his reason. Dante knew his lasagna was her favorite, and then there was the discussion of dating. Chances were, like her, he could use a sexual release, but she needed a straight answer. As it stood, she’d end up dwelling on their conversation until sleep finally consumed her, but at least she’d have this portion of it settled.

Dante took several steps forward until he crowded her against the kitchen counter. “Honestly? I planned to romance you.”

His familiar, earthy scent surrounded her. He stood so close, his warm breath caressed her lips. She could easily see them having sex right here in the kitchen. Hard, fast and hot sex.

He cupped her cheek with his warm hand. She sighed and closed her eyes at the gentle touch and leaned into his palm. She’d missed the feel of him.

“I don’t want a divorce and I hate living here without you. I lied to get you here tonight, because I wanted to see if there was anything left between us.”

She stiffened and opened her eyes. Her stomach tightened, not with sensual need, but with fear and self-loathing. And she had no one to blame but herself. She’d walked away, left their home, left him. Not because she didn’t love him, but because he represented what she’d lost. “Is this the point where you pull out one of your spiritual quotes? Maybe you’ll give me the ‘if you love something, set it free’ line. That’s rather fitting.”

He gave her a tired smile, then surprised her by cupping the back of her head and drawing her closer. “That one might work. If you still love me.”

About the Author

AuthorPic copyI didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good came from writing it. I realized my passion and found a career I love.

When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.

Interview With Jesse Pearle

Susana: What inspired you to start writing?

Jesse: I’d written some in college but nothing that was particularly inspired. It wasn’t until I started playing fantasy RPGs that the creative itch really got going. I play both video and tabletop RPGs, and the open-ended storytelling in them really leaves a lot up to the imagination. And boy did I imagine. I ended up with a story stuck in my head—a love story between two characters in two of my favorite video games that kept niggling in my brain until I finally sat down to write it.

Susana: How long have you been writing?

Jesse: November 2011 was when I first got that itch and haven’t been able to stop writing since.

Susana: What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

MEDIA KIT JessePearleHeadshot copyJesse: You can’t work in a vacuum. One of the best things I could have done for my writing was to let other people read it and critique it. I still remember the first constructive feedback I received on my first story. It was soooo hard to hear, but it was good for my writing to hear it. I’m still friends with the person now, and I am best friends with one of my other crit partners. It can be tricky to grow accustomed to honest feedback, but the more you do it, the more objective you learn to become about your own work, and the thicker a skin you develop. Having a thick skin is crucial to maintaining your sanity as a writer because bad reviews are inevitable, no matter how good your writing is.

Susana: What comes first: the plot or the characters?

Jesse: Characters almost always come first for me. Even in my current project I have a cast of characters who I know have to get from point A to point B. I’m just writing along, letting them show me how they need to get there. The plot tends to emerge in the process of me discovering what the characters’ true goals and conflicts are, and what will motivate them to overcome their conflicts to reach their goals.

Susana: Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Jesse: I’m about 90 percent pantser. Like I said above, I just know there’s a Point A and Point B (the beginning and the end), and perhaps a vague milestone somewhere in the middle. The plot gets fleshed out as I write my characters’ journeys between those points.

Susana: Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.

Jesse: While I was writing it I considered it an erotic romance due to the focus I placed on the sex scenes. It is, at it’s heart, a romantic suspense. I suppose you could take some of the sex out and the plot would still be intact, but some of the sex scenes are crucial enough to push it pretty close to an erotic romance. One of the books reviewers so far describes it as “off the charts” which was what I was going for.

Susana: Are you working on something at present that you would like to tell us about?

Jesse: I am constantly working on something. At the moment it’s a series of menage erotica novellas that I publish under a different pen name to protect the innocent (or maybe the guilty). I don’t hide it, however, and readers can find the link on my website—just look for the dragons.

Susana: What are you reading now?

Jesse: I just finished a book called Going Under, by Jeffe Kennedy. It’s a hot erotic romance that takes place in the San Juan islands. It’s a love story between a reclusive female video game designer and an investigative journalist seeking out the elusive designer (who he believes is a man based on the designer’s internet personas). I couldn’t put it down. I loved the gaming aspect of it (because I am a gamer), but the “games” that happen in the book aren’t strictly the digital variety. It has some very well written BDSM sex scenes, but my favorite part is how well-written the dynamic is between the two characters and their struggle to work up to an honest, open, mature relationship.

Susana: What author or authors have most influenced your writing?

Jesse: I’m influenced every day by other authors and not just by reading their books. My best friends are writers and they are my most valuable sounding boards for my books. But as far as well-known authors who have influenced my career, I would say Diana Gabaldon has been the strongest influence on my particular style of prose, Stephen King for his methods, and Hugh Howey for his take on the publishing industry.

Susana: Do you have a favorite quote or saying?

Jesse: “Some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.” – Gilda Radner

As much as I love a happily ever after, I honestly prefer books that are a little more unpredictable. I absolutely love cliffhangers, so I apologize to readers who don’t care for them. Pretty much everything I write tends to have them.

About Second Skin

Obsession is never just skin deep.

Sam Blanco’s greatest desire is to escape his abusive father and violent neighborhood the only way he can—by earning money as a tattoo artist for a street gang. He’s befriended their leader, the deadly Leo Reyes, and gained a measure of safety under their protection. But just when things are going right for the first time in Sam’s life, Leo’s girlfriend, Pilar Flores, walks in and requests a tattoo in an unusual location. Sam obliges, but the experience leaves them both reeling. Unable to focus for days, Sam finds himself craving Pilar’s touch, but she’s exactly the kind of trouble he doesn’t need.

Pilar Flores is her father’s daughter. Being the daughter of a drug lord is not an easy role to fill, but she aspires to live up to the title and make her father proud. But her father has no plans to allow her into the business, and Pilar hates being sidelined. She hates that Leo is away for days on end, and she especially hates being treated like an incompetent female by every man she sees. Except for Sam. She decides to take control of her life the only way she knows how—through seduction. But she’s not prepared for how eager and passionate a lover Sam is, or how deeply she’s drawn to him. Even though she knows their ill-fated affair can’t possibly end well…

(Sam’s POV)

MEDIA KIT SecondSkin_ByJessePearle-printmaster“So you just leave the pictures in here until they’re done or what?” Benny asked, flipping through the loose-leaf leather-bound book that Sam always kept with him wherever he went.

“Yeah, if I’m finished working on them I might take them out, give them away or what not. But it’s hard to know when I’m done. Some take a while.”

Sam set out the pieces of his machine in the usual, methodical order to begin assembling it once his client arrived. Something niggled at the back of his mind, however—somewhere behind the image of Pilar tied to her bed, her sweet dimples challenging him to do exactly the thing he planned to do as soon as he finished his drawing.

“Motherfucker,” Benny muttered under his breath.

A hot rush of panic infused Sam at the same instant he realized what he’d done…or failed to do.

“Like this one?” Benny turned the sketchbook around.

Sam’s stomach lurched when he saw the detailed nude sketch he’d made of Pilar Sunday morning. He’d spent enough time rendering her face that there was no mistaking who she was.

“Tell me you just drew her face from memory on some other girl’s body.”

Sam was sure he had a deer-in-the-headlights look when he said, “Not exactly…”

Benny gaped at him then looked back at the drawing. After a second more of studying it he just shook his head.

“Man, you are something else. I seriously think you must have a death wish. Or one huge pair of cojones.”

Sam had lost the ability to speak. His brain frantically attempted to process the implications of his friend seeing the picture of Pilar. Fuck, fuck, fuck, this wasn’t supposed to happen. You’re a fucking idiot, Sam.
