“Kenna, can I ask you a question?” Zane stopped outside the door to her room.

“Of course.” No matter where Storm’s gaze rested, the Marine was fascinating, from his direct gaze, to the curve of his smile to the hollow at the base of his throat.

“When you realized what you had to do to get your inheritance, what did you feel?”

Storm searched for an answer. Kenna had been furious, of course, but she couldn’t say that to Zane, not when the way he was looking at her told her he too was struggling against a current of desire.

“You know what I felt?” he went on when she didn’t reply, and his deep, warm voice touched off a new wave of want within her. “Relief. I wanted to marry anyway, but I was beginning to think I was the only one in the world who felt that way. The guys in my unit acted like marriage was a death sentence. Even the women I met seemed to think that.” He shrugged. “You’d think no one believed in marriage anymore. I do, though. I’ve always known exactly what I want. To get my family’s ranch back, to fall in love with a beautiful woman, and to start a family with her. When I heard Heloise’s conditions for inheriting the ranch, I thought, ‘Well, now I’ve got an excuse for going out and getting a wife.’” He laughed, but it was a bitter sound. “I’ve never told anyone that.” He looked away and the brim of his hat hid his face from view for a moment. When he turned back toward her his gaze was direct and searching. “What about you? Have you ever wanted something like that?”

Storm barely trusted herself to answer. Kenna would say no—she’d never wanted a husband or a family.

But Storm wasn’t Kenna.

“Yes. I’ve always wanted to marry, too. My parents were so happy together and it’s been so hard on my mom since…” She caught herself just in time, realizing she was getting her story crossed with Kenna’s. “I’ve always wanted to marry. I want…” What did she want? “I want a partner in life. Someone I can depend on. Someone I can celebrate with when things go well. I want us each to have our separate passions, but I want us to have plenty that we do together, too. Does that make sense?”

“That makes perfect sense. Kenna, I—”

“Call me Storm,” she said on impulse. “All my friends do.” Each time he said Kenna’s name it felt like a slap to the face. She didn’t want to remember Zane was her boss’s pretend fiancé, not hers. She didn’t want to think about Kenna at all.

“Storm,” he said slowly. “I like that. It suits you better than Kenna. Storm, I feel like you and I—” He broke off, turned away, and surveyed the parking lot beneath them. “Never mind.

Late that afternoon, Ned threw his truck into 4 x 4 mode and drove off the main road onto an unmarked, snow-covered track that led into a sparse pine forest. A glance at Fila told him she was still sitting stiffly in the passenger seat, one hand now clinging to the handle of the door. She hadn’t spoken much during their drive, which wasn’t anything new, but still worried him. He knew she hadn’t ridden in a vehicle much at all when she was in Afghanistan. The sensation still seemed to bother her. She probably didn’t relish traveling into a remote, mountainous area in the dead of winter, either, but what could he do? He couldn’t leave her back in Chance Creek.

“It’s going to get bumpy for a while,” he warned her. “Hang on, okay?”

“Are you sure this is safe?” she asked as he gunned the motor and powered through the deep snow on the track.

“I’ve done this a hundred times. It’s slow going but we’ll get there just fine.”

It took nearly another hour and a half to advance the eighteen miles on the snow-covered dirt road to reach the steeply plunging driveway that led off of it to the left down to the cabin. He started down it carefully, but the truck’s tires slid as the driveway curved and Ned cursed, hitting the gas and turning the wheel sharply to avoid sliding off the track.

A sharp intake of breath told him he’d scared Fila again. Ned gritted his teeth and kept going, inching forward. The snow was deeper than he’d imagined down here. They might have trouble getting back out. He’d seen a weather report, though; temperatures were due to rise in a few days. The snow would melt which meant the way out would still be bumpy, but passable. If they had to stay an extra day or two, so much the better. He could use the alone time with Fila.

“There it is,” he said, pointing to the roof of the log cabin that had just come into view. “My father used to take us boys up here every year to give my mother a week of peace. We loved—shit!”

The driveway curved back up here and he had just goosed the engine again to plow through a particularly deep bank of snow when the truck hit a patch of hidden ice, stalled in place, then found purchase again and shot forward unexpectedly.

“Fila!” Ned shouted as they surged over the side of the track. The land dropped sharply away and Ned braced himself as the truck fell through the air, then hit the earth nose-first with a crash that shook every bone in his body. The left front fender crumpled as it took the brunt of the impact and a searing pain ripped through Ned’s leg. Something snapped. Fila shrieked as the truck flipped over, throwing Ned against its roof.

The world went black.

The Cowboy Wins a Bride

“Bet she shoots you down when you do ask her,” Rob said, catching up to him.

“Bet you she doesn’t,” Jamie said, even though secretly he thought Rob might be right.

“How much? Hundred bucks?”

“You got it.”

“Good luck winning that bet,” Cab said, overtaking them. “Seeing as how Jamie isn’t asking her anytime soon.”

Jamie frowned. “I’ll ask her soon.”

“Bet you can’t marry her by Labor Day,” Rob said.

“If you’re getting married in ten weeks, you better hurry up and pop the question,” Ethan said from behind them.

“I’m not marrying Claire on Labor Day,” Jamie said. His plan called for using the summer to build her interest in the ranch. At some point, he’d ask her out, and in the fall he’d suggest they move in together. Maybe he’d propose at Thanksgiving. Sure, he’d bought the ring early, but experience had taught him to be prepared. Like Ethan said, some occasions were more romantic than others. If things should move faster than he expected, he didn’t want to be caught short.

And…well, he was looking forward to being engaged to Claire.

“You admitting she’ll turn you down?” Rob said. They reached the stack of chairs again, and added the new ones to the pile.

“No. I’d just like to go on a few dates before I ask her.” Jamie straightened up.

“Chicken.”

“I ain’t…”

“If you haven’t asked her out in the past decade, you aren’t going to ask her now. You’re blowing smoke up your own ass if you think you’re ever going to marry her.”

Jamie shoved his hands in his pockets to keep from balling them into fists and punching Rob. “I ain’t chicken and I am going to ask her.”

“Hundred bucks says that come Labor Day, you’re still single,” Rob said. “Safest bet I ever made.”

Cab, joining them, laughed out loud. “Got that right.”

“He’s got to think it over for another twelve years,” Ethan chimed in. “Doesn’t do to rush these things.”

Jamie bristled at this group attack on his cautious personality. “Hundred bucks says I’m married to Claire by the end of the summer.”

“Deal.” Rob grabbed his hand and shook it before Jamie had a chance to reconsider. He pointed across the lawn. “There she is, tiger. Go on and ask her. Just keep your distance from her right hook. You know how cranky she gets.”
